Please help us create a brilliant site by taking this survey

Published by Lorna under Business Progress

We are in the process of planning a new shopping website here at Garrendenny Lane and we want it to be one of the best out there – easy to navigate, lots of fabulous products, attractive, easy to order from, quick delivery, lovely gift boxes and lots lots more.

This is where we need your help. We’d really really appreciate if you could take this survey for us and if you have any suggestions for our new site, we would love to hear your comments.

We hope to have the new site up and running by mid September so this survey will only be live till the end of next week.

Garrendenny Lane in Sunday Business Post

Published by Lorna under Business Progress, Press

I was in the People in Business section of the Sunday Business Post today.  Here’s the article in its entireity (and yes, I guess I do multitask!).

Country practice perfects makeovers
18 April 2010 By Carol Hayes

Few businesspeople can claim to divide their time between interior design and farming, but for Lorna Sixsmith, it’s a way of life. Sixsmith runs an interior design business and online shop, in-between helping to deliver calves on the farm which she runs with her husband, Brian, in Carlow.

After renovating and decorating five houses over eight years while living in Britain and working as a teacher, Sixsmith had plenty of practical experience of design before she returned to Ireland with her husband to farm seven years ago. But as the dairy sector became increasingly financially challenging, she decided to diversify and turn her hobby into a business, opening Garrendenny Lane Interiors in November 2007.

‘‘At the time, I did worry if clients would take the business seriously, given that it was located on a farm, rather than on a high street, but people seem to enjoy the homely atmosphere,” she said. ‘‘Because a considerable amount of my time is spent doing home consultations, it doesn’t matter where my base is.”

With the downturn in the economy, working from home turned out to be a prudent move, as it saved Sixsmith a considerable amount on rent and staff.

It also means that she can manage her working hours around her children. Sixsmith grew up in Carlow on a dairy farm, before spending time working in Dublin, London and Bristol.

At 24, she decided to go to university, doing a degree in English and history and an MA in Irish studies. ‘‘I taught for four years before returning to Ireland with my husband in 2002, when our first child was three weeks old,” she says. She went on to complete a part-time diploma in interior design before starting the interiors business.

Sixsmith travels to international trade fairs twice a year to buy stock and keep abreast of the latest trends, and her clients come from all over the country. ‘‘They tend to be female, aged 30-plus and usually from within a 25-mile radius,” she said.

‘‘That said, I have had clients in Westmeath, Wexford and Sligo. My online customers are varied -most of them are Irish, but I do also have clients in Britain and America.”

She was nominated for two awards – personal service and female retailer – at the South East Women In Business awards last September.

Sixsmith said the recession had hit the interiors industry hard. ‘‘I found last summer very quiet, and I think part of it was due to the bad weather – people seemed to have planned to decorate a room, but then suddenly September came and they realised the summer had come and gone,” she said.

‘‘Rather than tackling most of the house, people are now generally decorating a room or two at a time.”

Sixsmith has joined a number of networking groups, including the Carlow Business Club and Women in Business at Carlow Enterprise Board.

‘‘Being part of a group means you are learning from others and exchanging ideas all the time – and it prevents you feeling isolated when you are working on your own,” she said.

My New Best Friend

Published by Lorna under Business Progress

A new addition to our family but we haven’t named her yet – my new Sat Nav and I love her already!

I have a terrible sense of direction but I resisted getting a sat nav up until now partly because I had heard stories of sat navs going slightly bonkers and sending people off their routes and I reckoned I wouldn’t have a good enough sense of direction to realise I was being sent the wrong way and partly because I didn’t have a problem going slightly wrong if it was down country lanes and I could stop and ask a friendly farmer or even stop near a landmark and ring the client for directions.

However, 2 weeks ago, I got lost going to see a client, partly because I had confused a crossroads with  a different one that she meant. And I left my phone in my other jacket so I had no means of phoning her.  I decided to drive on for a while, partly because I was early anyway and I reckoned I would find a landmark or a sign and work it out.  However, I soon realised I was way off track and turned back, I spotted a farmer fixing his plough in a field near the road and asked could I borrow his mobile. Rather begrudgingly he handed it over. So much for friendly farmers, I thought to myself as I dialled.  On working out where I was phoning from and getting directions, I handed the phone back with thanks and a fiver for a pint and he then became very friendly!!

I had to go and see a new client today in a part of Dublin that I wouldn’t be at all familiar with and then I planned to go back to the RDS for quick look at the stands at the Irish Furniture Fair. I decided to give in and buy the sat nav.

It is going to change my life, apart from a part of the new motorway that it didn’t recognise and was totally confused as it thought I was driving in the middle of fields, all went swimmingly.  And if I do happen to misunderstand and take a wrong turn, it doesn’t get irate or tell me I’m silly but announces in a very calm voice that it is recalculating!! My new best friend :-)

And even though Garrendenny is somewhat in the sticks, it does come up on sat nav so I’m sure other very rural places will too :-)

We were also mentioned in Irish Interiors this month (Yukari’s Hide and Seek - night – wallpaper was featured) and keep an eye out for us in the next edition of House and Home as well.

Munster Interiors will be on the shelves next week – in it you will find my blog watch article as well as an article I wrote on Interior Design Trends following my trip to Decorex.

Just to mention too – Yukari’s Sammy and Lola were mentioned in the Sunday Times and are just flying off the shelves, almost quicker than they can make them.
