Wallpaper on Ceilings
We have had wallpaper on feature walls, wallpaper on all four walls (which is still very fashionable) and the look for 2010 is going to be wallpaper on the ceilings. I guess when one thinks of all the ornate plastered ceilings in grand manor houses, it is a bit of a surprise that it took this long to catch on. Mind you, most of us don’t have the grand high ceilings of the Sistine Chapel so what will it look like in ordinary houses? Here’s a few pictures to give you an idea.

Maybe ceilings have been overlooked in recent years particularly with the return in popularity of wallpaper on all four walls. This picture from the House to Home website shows very plain walls and a very decorative ceiling. I like the way the wallpaper has been extended down to picture rail level. Could I live with it? Well, it would be nice to look at when I am trying to extract myself from the bed in the early mornings!

This caught my eye on the Renovation Planning blog. Personally, I don’t like the style of wallpaper that they have chosen and I think it is too much with the wallpaper on the walls as well, even though there is very little wall in this picture. What do you think?

You can just about see the wallpaper on the dormer ceiling in this picture – and wallpaper will be a great way of bringing architectural details like this into a nice feature rather than a bland headache.
Also from the PointclickHome website, is the picture below. I like the way it brings interest and definition to the stairway.

When I think of all the times we replaced ceilings or painted them first with a very thick paint designed to cover up all the cracks, before painting in a nice colour – why oh why wasn’t wallpaper on ceilings popular then!
So, what do you think? Is there a room in your house that would benefit from wallpaper on the ceiling? Love it or Hate it?

i don’t hate it but i don’t love it either…
over here in north west arkansas alot of people seem to paint their ceilings…which i don’t know if i like or not…
i do think it works best in the top pic with nothing on the walls until picture rail height…but then i wonder what that room will look like at dusk…or onthe depth of winter when its dark and grey outside…
a dark heavy ceiling like that – as good as it looks – well it might be too much for me…
what does anyone else think?
Not sure that it would suit my house but I love the flowery pink wallpaper featured on the ceiling. I’d say it would be very striking.
I do like the use of wallpaper in the first image, it’s quirky and fun but the grown up wallpaper helps to balance the scheme. Personally though, after painstakingly stripping layers of wallpaper off our living room ceiling, I will NEVER, ever, be following this trend!
I think I’ve falled in LUST with the flower wallpaper ceiling. It’s just GORGEOUS
[...] lust: flower power ceiling By roomenvy Ok, I admit this wallpapered ceiling might be a bit much on a day-to-day basis (especially afters girls’ night), but as a fan of [...]
This post has elicited a great response on Twitter and Facebook as well. Most people seem to hate it but it seems to be a dread of putting it up and removing it that is paramount! Like you, Paula, I can remember scraping many ceilings free of wallpaper too – lovely woodchip!
I think it works well in the right setting and was amused to see the floral one featured on Room Envy’s blog for her Lunchtime lust post
I think it’s terrific; an option often never thought of. I couldn’t live with the dark ceiling in the first picture, and without my glasses on in the morning the lovely detail of the pattern would be lost on me, but I particularly like the last two examples. Great idea.
I like the idea because it’s different and not something you see everywhere but I don’t know if I like it enough to try it. Maybe in a really small space – like above those stairs. It’s definitely food for thought.
It might work for me but reading all the comments I am not so sure if i am that brave. We will see.
