Interior Design Trends: Woodland

WOODLAND

Get back to nature and be inspired by your favourite woodland creatures

Summer’s in the air, the weather’s been very good for a pleasant change and everyone wants to get outdoors and back to nature, and it looks like the interiors world is following suit with this year’s biggest trend, woodland.

Yes that’s right our favourite forest dwelling creatures are the inspiration behind this year’s interior design trend.

Birds have been in vogue for a while, now the focus is on owls.  In terms of animals – foxes, rabbits and badgers are the key animals that epitomise this woodland theme.

So bring a bit of the wilderness indoors to help you get back to nature and keep up to date with the latest trends:

Pet Sounds by Mini Moderns – €49 a roll at Garrendenny Lane.  It features a woodland cacophony of music making creatures. Badgers have never been so cool, or so musical! We will soon have it in stock in the tea towels and cushions too.

Mini Modern’s Owl Rug €560 and Pet Sounds Wallpaper €49 a roll

The Moo wallpaper features farm animals but there are some rabbits there too – go on, see if you can spot them!

And we couldn’t get much more woodland than the gorgeous fabric wall stickers by Love Mae

These stickers will be arriving to Garrendenny Lane Online within a couple of weeks.

Wallpaper Wednesday: Sanderson Vintage

Published by Lorna under Wallpapers

And more wonderful wallpapers – all from Sanderson’s latest Vintage collecton which celebrates their 150 years in business and draws on the most fabulous wallpapers from their archive.  It was lovely to see them at the ID&A show at the RDS recently.

Here’s my favourites:

Sanderson’s Vintage Primavera  – the design was taken from a hand blocked wallpaper printed on gold foil dating from 1926, and features rhododendron leaves amongst stylised fruit and flower motifs in the distinctive Art Deco style. Available  in four colourways, this grape/chocolate colourway is my favourite.

Early Tulips was originally designed as a fabric in 1929.  The original sample shows a full arrangement of colourful tulip heads painted with a highly textured effect. Now redrawn by the Sanderson studio it is available as a wallpaper and fabric.  It is available in six colourways and the one above is the most vibrant in Aubergine/Cherry Red.  The term ‘dancing in the breeze’ comes to mind.

I’m delighted to see a strong geometric pattern in the collection.  Concord wallpaper is an optical geometric design inspired by ‘op-art’ artists such as Bridget Riley. This movement was among some of the more exciting trends that emerged during the 60s.  the metallic within it as well is so contemporary too.

All Sanderson fabrics and wallpapers are available to order from us – just whizz us an email at info@garrendennylane.ie

Garrendenny Lane in Sunday Business Post

Published by Lorna under Business Progress, Press

I was in the People in Business section of the Sunday Business Post today.  Here’s the article in its entireity (and yes, I guess I do multitask!).

Country practice perfects makeovers
18 April 2010 By Carol Hayes

Few businesspeople can claim to divide their time between interior design and farming, but for Lorna Sixsmith, it’s a way of life. Sixsmith runs an interior design business and online shop, in-between helping to deliver calves on the farm which she runs with her husband, Brian, in Carlow.

After renovating and decorating five houses over eight years while living in Britain and working as a teacher, Sixsmith had plenty of practical experience of design before she returned to Ireland with her husband to farm seven years ago. But as the dairy sector became increasingly financially challenging, she decided to diversify and turn her hobby into a business, opening Garrendenny Lane Interiors in November 2007.

‘‘At the time, I did worry if clients would take the business seriously, given that it was located on a farm, rather than on a high street, but people seem to enjoy the homely atmosphere,” she said. ‘‘Because a considerable amount of my time is spent doing home consultations, it doesn’t matter where my base is.”

With the downturn in the economy, working from home turned out to be a prudent move, as it saved Sixsmith a considerable amount on rent and staff.

It also means that she can manage her working hours around her children. Sixsmith grew up in Carlow on a dairy farm, before spending time working in Dublin, London and Bristol.

At 24, she decided to go to university, doing a degree in English and history and an MA in Irish studies. ‘‘I taught for four years before returning to Ireland with my husband in 2002, when our first child was three weeks old,” she says. She went on to complete a part-time diploma in interior design before starting the interiors business.

Sixsmith travels to international trade fairs twice a year to buy stock and keep abreast of the latest trends, and her clients come from all over the country. ‘‘They tend to be female, aged 30-plus and usually from within a 25-mile radius,” she said.

‘‘That said, I have had clients in Westmeath, Wexford and Sligo. My online customers are varied -most of them are Irish, but I do also have clients in Britain and America.”

She was nominated for two awards – personal service and female retailer – at the South East Women In Business awards last September.

Sixsmith said the recession had hit the interiors industry hard. ‘‘I found last summer very quiet, and I think part of it was due to the bad weather – people seemed to have planned to decorate a room, but then suddenly September came and they realised the summer had come and gone,” she said.

‘‘Rather than tackling most of the house, people are now generally decorating a room or two at a time.”

Sixsmith has joined a number of networking groups, including the Carlow Business Club and Women in Business at Carlow Enterprise Board.

‘‘Being part of a group means you are learning from others and exchanging ideas all the time – and it prevents you feeling isolated when you are working on your own,” she said.

Blues, Birds and Yellows …. some of the Interior Design Trends for Summer 2010

Published by Lorna under Posts to Blog

Blue is the new black – whether it is turquoise,  indigo or a pale blue, it is fashionable for Summer 2010. Blues suggest summer skies, calmness, serenity, analytical thinking, royalty, importance, freshness, fresh thinking and also to ward off evil spirits so all good news for us as we work to leave doom and gloom behind. As I’ve said here before, this year is all about creating a haven and sanctuary within our homes and blue is one of those colours to do it with.

Yellow is also a very fashionable colour this year and can be used to great effect as a accent, be it on a small archair, cushions, lampshades, vases etc.  A sunny and optimistic colour, it definitely works to enliven and enlighten our mood :-)

Birds and butterflies are still very much in vogue – both in terms of ornaments, adorning crockery, wallpaper and fabric designs.
